THE ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (COCI) has selected a tea set made from coconut husks as the Myanmar Work of Excellence at the ASEAN Award of Excellence in Arts and Crafts Exhibition, held on March 10 and 11 in Bangkok.

Daw Nu Mra Zan, the director of the Department of Cultural Institute under the Ministry of Culture, said ASEAN member countries had each sent five works to the exhibition, at which the best work from each country was awarded US$1000 by COCI.

"The department will award the creator of prizewinning work, Ko Wunna Kyaw, in a formal ceremony," she said.

Ko Wunna Kyaw had submitted two of his pieces - the tea set and a table lamp, both made of coconut husks - to a local contest aimed at picking the five best works to send to the Bangkok exhibition.

Aside from Ko Wunna Kyaw's tea set, Myanmar was also represented at the exhibition by a table lamp made from copper wire, a gem painting, a necklace made from petrified wood and a copper teapot.

ASEAN-COCI held the exhibition with the aim of promoting the traditional handicrafts of member countries.
