Meditation

Description: There are two different practices of meditation.

There are two different practices of meditation. One is Vippassana, a system based on the continual concentration on every movement of the body and change of mind, so that one becomes accustomed to being constantly conscious of one's actions and thoughts. In this way one becomes keenly aware of one's emotions such as anger pain, hurt, jealousy and greed at the very onset of their rising and with this awareness, be able to control them. This meditation 'Douses the Fires of Suffering', and in a world where you cannot control Fate, at least you can control how you respond to it. Deeper concentrations in this system bring one to Nirvana, the state of supreme peace and with it, a cessation of rebirths. The other as practiced by those desiring to attain supernatural powers is Thama Hta meditation. It is at times a rigid ritual of staring at lighted candles for days on end, walled up in a small cave.

Some meditation centres in Yangon offer instruction in English. They include the Soon-lun Centre off Pyay Road; the International Mahasi Centre in Bahan township; the Dhamma Joti Vipassana Centre on Nga Htut Kyee Road, Bahan township; the International Meditation Centre on Inya Myaing Road; and the Pandita Rama Centre off Than Lwin Road, which has a website (http://web.ukonline.co.uk/buddhism/pandita.htm) through which one can apply to attend.
